What the King’s Cup Actually Is
For anyone new to it, the King’s Cup, officially the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ Cup, is Saudi Arabia’s premier knockout competition and the second oldest cup in the country’s football history. Here’s what’s worth knowing about it.
- It’s organised by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and runs alongside the domestic league season.
- The competition began in the 1960s, was paused, and was reintroduced in 2008 before settling into its current knockout format in 2014.
- SAFF revised the tournament’s historical records in 2025, adjusting which past titles count as league championships and which count as cup wins.
- The winner earns a place in the AFC Champions League Two the following season, so the cup carries real continental weight, not just bragging rights.
- Al-Hilal are the most decorated club in the competition’s history, and they enter this year’s Round of 32 chasing a tenth title in the current era.
- A newly designed trophy was unveiled in 2024, made from sterling silver coated in 24 carat gold plate by British silversmiths Thomas Lyte.

How the King’s Cup Winner Is Decided
The King’s Cup is a straight knockout from the Round of 32 through to the final, so one bad night is enough to end a club’s campaign.
- Every tie from the Round of 32 onward is a single leg, with no second match to claw back a bad result.
- If scores are level after 90 minutes, the match goes to extra time, as happened with Al-Wehda’s win over Al-Shabab this round.
- If the teams are still level after extra time, the tie is settled on penalties, the route Al-Orobah used to see off Abha.
- The competition continues through the Round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals before a single final decides the champion.
- A club that wins the trophy three years running, or four times in total, gets to keep that physical trophy rather than handing it back.

Eight Round of 32 ties are done and eight remain, with Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ettifaq all facing their first test of the competition inside the next two days. Al-Hilal’s straightforward win over Al-Raed keeps them on course for a record extending title, but Al Qadsiah’s 5-0 win suggests they won’t have it their own way. FootballMint will have the Round of 16 draw and full schedule as soon as the last of these ties are settled.
