The previous campaign delivered one of the most dramatic seasons in recent ISL history. East Bengal ended a long wait for league success, while several major decisions away from the pitch reshaped the future of Indian football.

Key moments from the 2025 to 2026 season include:

  • East Bengal won their first Indian Super League title and their fourth top tier league championship overall.
  • Diamond Harbour earned promotion after winning the Indian Football League.
  • Mohammedan SC were relegated from the top division.
  • Jamshedpur FC later withdrew from the 2026 to 2027 season after missing the participation fee deadline.
  • The AIFF and ISL clubs agreed to a new four year club led commercial model.
  • Promotion and relegation remain part of the league structure.
  • The competition returns to a full home and away format.
  • India lost its AFC Champions League Two place, with the ISL champions or the highest eligible club now qualifying for the AFC Challenge League preliminary stage.
  • Antonio López Habas returned as East Bengal head coach after Óscar Bruzón departed.
  • Manolo Márquez became Mumbai City head coach after leaving FC Goa.

These developments mean the new season is about far more than the race for the trophy. Clubs are entering a fresh commercial era while adapting to changes in continental qualification and league governance. FootballMint will be following how those decisions affect teams both on and off the pitch throughout the campaign.
